Abstract

This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation provides details of 25 use cases that feature the intersection between generative AI technologies and software development. The software development use cases are categorized into the following 5 groups: planning, development, DevOps, quality, and safety. Each category contains 5 use cases. Each use case in this document is presented by means of a dashboard that contains a description, example, data modality, business impact, metrics and KPIs, and risk level and complexity.

One of the innovations of this research is its illustration that generative AI has implications for software development that transcend improved developer productivity as demonstrated by coding assistants. This document shows that generative AI has a multitude of effects on development that extend to use cases such as requirements definition, application modernization, model training and tuning, pipeline efficiency optimization, quality and testing, benchmarking model performance, security policy, and ethics management and governance. All of these use cases are software development use cases and collectively illustrate the expansiveness of the intersection between generative AI technologies and software development.
