Abstract

This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation provides a quick situational overview and actionable guidance for tech leaders on how to use frontline, field, and operations technology to address business problems and foster innovation.

Frontline, field, and operations technology can create new value streams and digital advantages from fresh data sources that can track the frontline interactions of customers, suppliers, the shop floor, and sensors anywhere. But getting to that point takes some work.

What has been referred to as IT/operational technology (OT) convergence and the myriad use cases of IoT and sensors is now referenced under the rubric of cyberphysical systems (CPS) and represents any collection of physical and computer components that are integrated with one another to operate a process safely and efficiently. Connecting multiple CPS processes into an intelligent ecosystem under the supervision and orchestration of artificial intelligence (AI) is the key to making effective real-time decisions.

“Developing unique frontline cyberphysical systems can create a clear digital advantage in the marketplace,” says Robert Multhaup, adjunct research advisor with IDC’s IT Executive Programs (IEP).
