Abstract
This IDC TechBrief examines medical training with augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). It explains how AR/VR can complement current medical training, the benefits it provides, the steps interested parties should take when building a solution and, finally, a list of hardware and software vendors to consider.
"Historically, training has been the most popular use case for augmented and virtual reality in the workplace," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director, IDC's Augmented and Virtual Reality team. "Both provide a safe environment within which to learn and practice different techniques and, in turn, these develop muscle memory and confidence. What better place to apply these than to medical training where practice makes for better results, namely a healthier patient or a patient on the road to recovery."
"AR/VR is emerging as a new digital scalpel in the medical training arsenal," says Mutaz Shegewi, senior research director, IDC Health Insights team. "AR/VR is carving a new path in medical training. Beyond simulations, it is shaping confident, skilled practitioners. As adoption grows, AR/VR will redefine how we learn and practice medicine, surgery, and clinical sciences."
