Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective is our first in a series of documents that will highlight "what's changed" in key hardware market segments since 2019. The specific period for this analysis is important and purposely obvious as it includes the last full year not impacted by the global pandemic up through the completion of the most recent year. In between, several unique and major market forces combined to contribute to a seismic market shift. In this analysis, we explore the specific impact on the desktop inkjet market with specific focus on the hybrid work model where desktop inkjet printing devices dominate the home working location.

"Inkjet printers and MFPs have had a long-standing presence in the home printing market. Unique world events experienced from early 2020 to present have served to materially change the opportunity for these devices as they are increasingly used to address both consumer and business applications in the home office," said Keith Kmetz, program vice president for Imaging, Printing and Document Solutions at IDC. "This new analysis examines recent history in the context of uncovering new developments within key foundational print product categories with an eye toward future expectations."
