Abstract
This IDC Future IT Blueprint provides a quick situational overview and actionable guidance for tech leaders to improve line-of-business (LOB) relationships.
When the C-suite, corporate and LOB executives, and the IT organization aren't working together, business suffers. That's why it's critical to prioritize LOB relationship management, led by the CIO, through listening, education, fostering trust, effective communication, corporate governance, and joint reporting and measurement.
"To be viewed as a person of knowledge and influence takes persistent and consistent steps to engage and partner with the LOB. The partnership results in the best mix of information technology and operational technology, with decisions that benefit both the short-term health and future prosperity of the enterprise," says Cora Carmody, adjunct research advisor with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP).
CIOs are ultimately responsible for leading these relationships, but a BRM (business relationship manager) is increasingly a key link between the business and technology. "The business relationship manager helps each side to understand the needs and capabilities of the other, how they can make better investment decisions together," says David Weldon, adjunct research advisor with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "By improving LOB relationships, organizations become more effective digital businesses, and IT can move from being an order taker delivering basic services to full joint owners of the enterprise."
