Abstract
This IDC study details the importance of network detection and response (NDR) as a cyberdefense. The endpoint tells parts of the story, policy is an important aspect of cyberdefense, and there is any number of data tools that can indicate the presence of adversarial behavior. However, endpoint agents dissolve and data policies change. Yet the network and its packets have certain immutable characteristics. Therefore, the network itself can be used as a corpus of detection based on session data, zero trust principles, and unusual port activity.
The network is the first and final arbiter of a business' communication enterprise. Applications are stored, employees create workflow, and customers interact with the network. The network hosts applications and is responsible for the storage and indexing of data. A high-performing and secure network is an indispensable asset for a business.
"Network detection and response is an essential cyberdefense," notes Chris Kissel, research vice president, Security and Trust at IDC. "The network unifies the efficacy of security tools while also providing redundancy. In many ways, the network provides its own self-diagnosis. NDR can be both the first line of detection and the last detection possible when other perimeter or policy-based defenses fail."
