Abstract

This IDC Survey summarizes findings related to generative AI (GenAI) infrastructure investment priorities based on input from 881 worldwide IT and business decision-makers who participated in IDC's January 2024 Future Enterprise Resiliency and Spending Survey, Wave 1.

The dramatic increase in awareness of and investment in generative AI has triggered a race to create and deploy a new generation of data-intensive and computationally intensive workloads across a wide range of geographies and industries. Impacts are being felt around the IT industry even as many organizations struggle to balance budgets and continue to worry about recessions and supply chain problems.

Survey results indicate that workload-centric deployment decisions are needed to match infrastructure performance, cost, data management, and security requirements to specific business use cases. Infrastructure cost concerns continue to be one of the top GenAI investment inhibitors. GenAI is expected to transform many infrastructure-related operational processes, but the majority of organizations expect to retain or grow infrastructure and operations (I&O) head count while investing in GenAI-specific skills development and training.
