Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight shows the top pain points in using cloud platform services. The research provides compelling evidence that the pain in the cloud continues to be at the intersection of development and operations. Encumberments on developers and engineers slow their ability to deliver new software, intelligent applications, and digital application features to end customers. IDC research shows vendors are addressing these pain points, including Red Hat, VMware, Oracle, AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, Digital Ocean, Vercel, SUSE, Edgio, Platform.sh, Cloud Foundry, Canonical, Salesforce, Fermyon, Cosmonic, and Render.

The data comes from IDC's 2024 Cloud Platform Services and PaaS Decision Maker Survey that supports research on the current state and future trends in the cloud market, focusing on cloud platform services/PaaS solution areas. Developers, data scientists, platform engineers, IT operators, and others use these layers of cloud services to modernize, create, manage, and deploy applications. The survey identifies the challenges and most compelling benefits decision-makers recognize with adopting solutions in the broad cloud platform services/PaaS market, covering:

  • DataOps and Database Management Platform Services
  • Kubernetes/Containers Platform Services
  • Serverless/Functions as a Service
  • Machine Learning Software Services
  • Generative AI (GenAI), AI, and ML Software Services/Components

In this United States–based study, there is significant market share across all three major types of cloud strategies (primary cloud, multicloud, and cross-cloud). All survey participants are from midsize to large organizations, use at least one major cloud vendor, and are using cloud services for software modernization, development, and deployment. In addition, more than half of respondents deploy applications to the edge, which enables analysis of how edge application needs are impacting customer needs and buying decisions in the cloud market.
