Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight focuses on how extended reality tools (augmented, virtual, and mixed reality) can significantly benefit those working on the frontline of industrial operations that deal directly with assets and production processes. Extended reality (XR) tools can help connect workers to essential data directly at the point of work. For frontline workers, adopting XR technology can optimize workflows, increase productivity, reduce training times, enhance safety protocols, streamline access to essential data, and provide remote guidance for industrial operations.

"One of the major pain points for industrial organizations today is connecting their workforce to data," said Carlos M. González, research manager of Internet of Things Ecosystems and Trends at IDC. "The benefit of extended reality tools is that they can connect workers to data right where they work. They save time by not having to look up guidance or request assistance at a remote terminal. Instead, they can instantly queue up the necessary information via a smart device or an XR headset."

The increasing trend of XR technology aligns with the rise of the industrial metaverse that companies like Microsoft, Apple, Rockwell Automation, PTC, and Siemens are currently shaping. They are combining digital twin models and enterprise data with extended reality technologies, next-generation connectivity, and artificial intelligence.

This IDC Survey Spotlight is based on IDC's August 2023 Future of Operations Worldwide Survey, which surveyed 864 organizations.
