Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight examines which worldwide public cloud service providers should media and entertainment (M&E) companies use to host their applications.

In the media industry's transition to cloud services, there are several viable infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) providers including Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Alibaba Cloud, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud, and region/country-specific cloud service providers. Transitioning to cloud requires strategic decisions about which applications make sense as priorities based on the business cycle between media and business operations, production, distribution, and monetization.

While the United States is ahead in migration to cloud services, globally it has yet to materialize at the same rate for various reasons depending on the application. One primary reason is the lack of a cohesive strategy and business plan whereby all parties including technology vendors agree on a comprehensive business cycle total-cost-of-ownership model in alignment with the media company's business goals, risk/reward responsibilities, vision, and road map. That said, this IDC Survey Spotlight identifies which of the major service providers are leading by key applications and services to better inform customers and prospects looking at moving specific workloads. This also lends itself to deciding which ones are favored by experience with these applications in a multicloud environment.
