Abstract

This IDC Market Perspective takes a look at the adoption by end-user companies of digital platforms and their corresponding ecosystems along with who their most important strategic partners are to empower this change. So much of the value in any company is locked up in data — customer data, supply chain data, research data, and so forth. One of the key values of a digital platform is unlocking and integrating that value within a specific business process or stream and across multiple business streams. That is why companies have begun to transition to digital platforms. This research looks at the adoption levels of digital platforms and who the key strategic partners are when it comes to making this transition.

"As part of the monumental shift of digital transformation, organizations are slowly but surely moving to digital platforms and their corresponding ecosystems as a way to drive both efficiency and effectiveness," noted Alan Webber, program vice president, Digital Platform Ecosystems Research at IDC. "The shift to the cloud was just the beginning. Moving applications to the cloud and then building true digital platforms on the cloud that can take advantage of a rich ecosystem of corresponding applications and services to extend the value of a technology are the next logical step. And after this, it is going to be companies using GenAI to create their own specially tailored and perhaps disposable applications to take advantage of the unique strengths of the digital platforms."
