Abstract

This IDC Market Presentation defines the digital platform ecosystem (DPE), explains the components of a DPE, and then describes the different continuums of the platform, the partners, and the value that flows through a DPE business model.

Businesses are no longer single-entity enterprises but are instead dynamic and ever-changing organismlike entities that need to evolve in order to survive and thrive. What enables businesses to be that agile while remain resilient are the applications of constellations of platforms across the enterprise, and much of the value from those platforms comes not just from the platform itself but also from the applications connected to that platform, the services that enable the platform, and a whole ecosystem of other applications and services that drive value. It is important for technology vendors and their customers to understand what this new platform–centric world is like, and for that purpose, IDC has created this document to define and describe the platform ecosystem era.

Marc Anderseen from the venture capital firm Anderseen Horowitz famously said back in 2011 that "software is eating the world." Today, a decade or more later platforms and their ecosystems are eating the software world.
