Abstract
This IDC PlanScape is based on and is a supplement to A CIO Change Leadership Strategy Framework for the Digital Era: The CIO's Direct Reports (IDC #US50351223, February 2023). This PlanScape covers specific actions an IT leader can take to build influential authority with — and develop — direct reports.
"The dynamics are different between an IT leader and their direct reports. The IT leader is at the top of the IT organization chart, and they can use that to lead change," says Niel Nickolaisen, adjunct research advisor for IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP). "However, leveraging that positional authority rarely develops the empowered leaders and teams an IT leader needs to influence the entire organization. In fact, using positional authority should be the leadership model of last resort."
