Abstract

This IDC study provides a forecast of the installed base of the number of IoT "things" that are connected, as well as the data generated each year created by these things. This document also categorizes the devices and the data across several categories, including computer vision cameras, consumer/connected homes, industrial/commercial, medical, and navigation/automotive/transportation. The Market Definition section includes definitions of the categories and the devices in each category.

"The fluctuation of supply chains and the growth of flexible online commerce has shown that connecting and utilizing a digital infrastructure for operations is no longer a luxury, but a necessity," said Carlos M. González, research manager for the Internet of Things at IDC. "For organizations to excel in data-driven operations, investing in IoT projects and capitalizing on IoT data is essential. Connecting devices to data networks to gather insight, expand operations, and increase performance are the hallmarks of executing an IoT ecosystem."
