Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses Sky's transition to cloud services. Sky has essentially developed a template for successful cloud services transformation. By focusing on the foundational building blocks first, the company has set up the guidelines necessary to transform its culture; retrain staff and hire the right skilled workers; set up engineering principles that all vendor partners must follow throughout their journey; and established a clear strategy, vision, and timelines to make sure the company executes on its road map while addressing legacy facilities and systems through its remaining life cycle. The vision of a single cloud platform for development and operations addressing the entire business cycle including production, distribution and monetization sets it up to achieve a 100% media factory for Sky within the next five years.

"Sky's overall strategic plan, engineering principles, fail fast and adopt, vendor selection process, resource skills update, and the one platform and operations vision are an amazing accomplishment, valuable business for lessons learned, and a template for success," said Alex Holtz, research director, Worldwide Media and Entertainment Digital Strategies. "As a strategic and valued partner, AWS not only played a primary role providing infrastructure and platform services but was also instrumental providing the cloud services training needed to bring Sky's staff current for their digital transformation."
