Abstract

This IDC Survey looks at data from IDC's North American XDR End-User Buyer Perception Survey. There seems to be a gulf between what leading vendors wish to offer in an extended detection and response (XDR) technology stack and what buyers would like to see. In a February 2023 survey, IDC interviewed 521 ITSecOps professionals about their potential use cases, what they would be willing to pay, and which tools they thought their company could retire if they consolidated on an XDR solution.

In this survey, IDC asked:

  • What premiums a buyer would pay for certain capabilities that could be added onto an XDR offering
  • Which tool purchases they would winnow out with an XDR stack
  • Which companies they are considering purchasing an XDR stack from
  • What outcomes their SOC team wishes to derive from an XDR purchase

"For the better part of two years, cybersecurity vendors have been trying to build the ideal XDR software solution," notes Chris Kissel, research vice president, Cloud-Native XDR and SOC Analytics at IDC. "Buyers want everything of course, but we learned a few important snippets about related technologies such as SIEM, EDR, and SOC management by asking the North American end user directly."
