Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight focuses on the rising role of robotics within industrial organizations. Across several industries, the use of robots for automation has increased to enhance productivity and combat labor shortages. Historically, the automotive industry has led all other industries in robotic sales. However, robotic systems have become more sophisticated over the past decade. These robots have a smaller footprint, can work safely among human workers, and can handle delicate items. This allows other industries, such as agriculture, oil and gas, electronics, and consumer packaged goods, to use robots for their industrial processes.

According to IDC'sWorldwide Future of Operations Survey, 2022, the importance of robotics for operational excellence and resilience has risen in several industrial verticals. For oil and gas (downstream) operations, robots are more critical for operations than in automotive. In agriculture, robotics ranked the highest technological tool for operational excellence and resilience, leading all other industries.

"Robotic automation can be an equalizer for many companies. The increasing labor shortage and the demand for flexible production require modular automated systems," said Carlos M. González, research manager of Operational Technology at IDC. "Collaborative robots, crawler robots, drones, and autonomous mobile robots have provided several automated solutions for companies to increase their productivity and achieve higher operational excellence."

This IDC Survey Spotlight is based on IDC's September 2022 Worldwide Future of Operations Worldwide Survey, which surveyed 1,371 organizations.
