Abstract

This IDC Perspective lays out IDC's current value stream management (VSM) definition with sample use cases and context for adoption. We increasingly see the leverage of VSM in both DevOps and business contexts, as organizations seek to identify, drive, and assess value throughout their initiatives. Yet common scaffolding and definitions around VSM remain elusive. Our intent here is to create specific, delineated context for VSM usage and adoption, benefiting from existing frameworks (such as the VSM Consortium's approach) and applying those concepts to usage in the field. As VSM expands its use cases beyond IT into business and product-oriented and project-oriented adoption, specificity becomes all the important as a common basis for discussion, evaluation, usage, and further VSM evolution.

"Our team at IDC chose to come together to lay out a clear, common definition and framework for IDC's analysis of VSM initiatives, processes, strategies, and automation," says Melinda Ballou, research direction for IDC's Agile ALM, Quality, and Portfolio Strategies Service. "This initial framework sets the stage for additional research, guidance for process and organizational strategies, and technology assessments of VSM providers as we move into 2023 and beyond."
