Abstract
This IDC Perspective provides an update to one of IDC's foundational documents focused on the future of connectedness. This document identifies the forces that shape the enterprise's future connectivity goals, as viewed from both the supply side and demand side. As enterprises address the challenges of managing business operations, investment in new networking technologies that allow data to move seamlessly across networks to employees, digital endpoints, customers, and partners fuels the future of connectedness. These supply forces include aspects such as the move from hardware- to software-centric networks, manageability, scalability, and network security. On the demand side, customer requirements form a picture of the idealized network and the outcomes it enables. These include interoperability, flexibility, and pervasiveness.
"The evolution of the future enterprise highlights the interplay between these forces as they continue to shape the connectedness continuum," said Paul Hughes, research director for IDC's Future of Connectedness Agenda program. "As enterprises embrace a wireless-first and cloud-centric approach to day-to-day business operations, building a foundation of connectedness that ensures scale, adaptability, and resiliency should be the top priority for building out the key pillars of digital transformation."
