Abstract

This IDC study explores the technologies that constitute major themes in media and entertainment regarding AI/ML, cloud, data, and OTT technologies and services.

The media and entertainment industry is in the process of a digital transition that will dramatically change the way content is created, produced, distributed, and monetized. The direct-to-consumer business model presents both opportunities and challenges related to cloud services as broadcasters, publishers, and motion picture studios prioritize the transition of applications to cloud services while continuing to maintain facility-based processes, not to mention the adoption of new technologies and applications that are developing simultaneously with cloud. The good news is that as the industry moves to cloud services and OTT/CTV and mobile distribution as standard practice, many of the new interactive services will deliver amazing consumer experiences. The convergence of content with interactive social, data, polling and gaming, metaverse and NFTs, fantasy and betting for live sports, news, reality shows, game shows, sitcoms, drama, movies, and other live events will forever change the consumer experience with maximum immersion and engagement.

"The media and entertainment industry is undergoing an aggressive transformation as it looks to doing business in an increasingly digitized cloud-based production, distribution, and monetization world," states Alex Holtz, research director, Worldwide Media and Entertainment Digital Strategies at IDC. "The future of digital M&E applications and services rests on its ability to enable organizations to fully operate digitally from end to end, moving from a hybrid cloud adoption strategy to full cloud implementation. The focus should therefore not be on the technologies themselves but rather on the transformational business outcomes that such technologies can bring about in the organization with their rapid adoption to meet consumer demand for media and interactive services convergence."
