Abstract

This IDC Presentation, an annual Future of Operations (FoO) study, aims to better understand the determinants of operational excellence and resilience within 16 industry subsegments and 14 countries across the globe. For the purposes of this survey, the definition of operations refers to the activities responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient execution of physical processes central to an organization's business. IDC Future of Operations' team conducted a survey covering the business priorities, and drivers to uncover insights into an organization's processes, initiatives, and investments in technologies that deliver data-driven operations. The survey results were collected and presented in September 2023. This report focuses on the utilities industry survey findings for the Asia/Pacific region.

"The utilities industry faces significant challenges in accessing data and ensuring visibility, addressing safety issues and overcoming staffing and talent shortages to maintain operational excellence. In addressing the evolving landscape of the utilities sector in the Asia/Pacific region, enhancing employee productivity, customer satisfaction, and the acceleration of innovation are the top business priorities, signaling a shift toward more agile and responsive operational frameworks. Additionally, the focus on energy efficiency, health and safety performance metrics, and operational efficiency underscores the sector's commitment to sustainable and responsible energy use and management. Together, these elements highlight a complex interplay of goals and challenges, necessitating a strategic approach to operational management that leverages technology; fosters innovation; and prioritizes flexibility, efficiency, and safety," says Rakesh Patni, associate research director, Energy Insights for Asia/Pacific.
