IDC Expects the overall PC market in New Zealand to Decline by 12.4% in 2023

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, 11 December 2023 - According to International Data Corporation ’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Devices Tracker, New Zealand’s traditional PC market, inclusive of desktops, notebooks, and workstations, declined by 8.3% Year-on-Year (YoY) in 3Q23, shipping 165 thousand units, marking its sixth consecutive quarter of YoY declines.

Consumer segment spending dropped 17.3% YoY due to rising living costs. Demand was muted in Q3 as consumers held off their purchases in anticipation of the upcoming Black Friday and end-of-the-year promotions in Q4.

The commercial segment remained relatively flat with a slight YoY decline at -1.7% as shipments outperformed expectations, mainly due to strong growth in Chrome-based devices from Lenovo and HP Inc. Businesses continued to be cautious with their spending as orders were delayed due to macroeconomic issues in the country. The government segment continued slowing down as the country finished conducting its elections. Government spending should grow again once newly elected officials settle into public office. The small and medium-sized business (SMB) segment showed sluggishness, as smaller companies continued to reduce spending.

“The escalating cost of living continued to have adverse effects on both consumer and commercial spending. We can expect to see some relief for the consumer segment during Black Friday and end-of-year promotions,” said Anmol Bajaj, Research Analyst for Personal Computing Devices Research at IDC New Zealand.

2023 Outlook

IDC expects the overall PC market to decline by 12.4% in 2023. The consumer segment will see more traction in Q4 due to Black Friday and end of year promotions. In 2024, we can expect to see some growth from both the consumer and commercial segments as the economy is expected to bounce back towards the second half of 2024.

Notes:

  • Shipments include shipments to distribution channels or end-users. OEM sales are counted under the company/brand under which they are sold.
  • Traditional PCs include Desktops, Notebooks, and Workstations and do not include Tablets or x86 Servers. Detachable Tablets and Slate Tablets are part of the Personal Computing Device Tracker but are not addressed in this press release.
