Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight briefly looks at interest in generative AI (GenAI) smartphones among consumers in the United States. In spring 2024, IDC surveyed 1,979 smartphone owners, asking if they owned a GenAI smartphone, and if they did, if they were interested in getting one in the future. We also asked them what they thought was the biggest advantage of owning a GenAI smartphone.

"Generative artificial intelligence is making its slow but certain way to almost all smartphones in the United States," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Mobile Phones team. "AI has quickly generated buzz across all technology products, and smartphones are no exception. Although ownership is low right now, high interest and availability on nearly all new smartphones going forward will carry the market."

"But for as much interest GenAI smartphones generate, there still seems to be a great deal of uncertainty about them," adds Llamas. "Certainly, GenAI smartphones can streamline multiple processes, saving time and attention, and this is where vendors will concentrate their efforts. But not to be overlooked is the valuable education piece of what GenAI can and cannot do to drive and sustain adoption."
