Abstract

This IDC Survey — taken in the spring of 2024 — focuses on consumer ownership of headphones and earbuds. We polled 996 owners of these devices, focusing on which brands they own, which brands they intend to get next, how much they have spent and what they plan to spend, reasons for switching brands, and overall satisfaction.

"Headphones and earbuds quickly became the must-have wearable device to own," said Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Wearables team. "But with growth starting to taper off, vendors find themselves in a tougher position to retain current customers while luring new ones from other vendors. What we have found is that many are satisfied with their current devices and plan on staying with the same brand, yet there is a small percentage of users who are willing to switch. At the same time, on average, most users have said that they are willing to pay more than what they paid last time for a new device. These give vendors information and incentive to review their offerings and how they stack up against the competition."
