Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight examines consumers' attitudes and willingness to pay for 5G connectivity delivered via low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. These insights come from questions in IDC's August 2024 U.S. Consumer Communications and Mobile Services Survey.

Mobile operators have announced a number of partnerships with satellite companies over the past 12 months, yet tangible details about timing, availability, and cost of tapping into 5G from the stars remains opaque. Whether the amount of resources invested in these partnerships eventually pay meaningful returns depends heavily on the massive consumer mobile subscriber market. With iPhone users already able to access an extremely limited, free satellite service on iPhone 14 models and newer, there is a risk that consumers may come to expect ubiquitous 5G coverage, whether from terrestrial or non-terrestrial networks, to be a de facto part of the standard wireless service plan without additional fees. Assessing the consumer appetite to pay more for satellite 5G is critical to ensuring that the investments of 5G satellite partnerships deliver bottom-line benefits to all parties.
