Abstract

This IDC Survey — conducted in the spring 2024 — focuses on consumer ownership of smartphones. We polled 1,979 smartphone owners, focusing on which brands they own, how long they plan to keep their smartphones, which brands they intend to get next, how much they have spent and what they plan to spend for their next device, and where they will go to acquire their next smartphones.

"Although the U.S. consumer smartphone market has reached maturity, underpinning it is a constant cycle of purchases and replacements," said Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Mobile Phones team. "Vendors and channels alike should be aware of where smartphones are in their life cycle, how consumers plan to dispose of their current smartphones and acquire their next ones, and work together to provide potential buyers with compelling materials and payment plans. Furthermore, vendors should pay close attention to how much of a flight risk some customers can be and work to prevent them from leaving."
