Abstract

This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation draws on data from the annual worldwide 2024 Future of Work Survey, highlighting responses from 1,269 professionals across North America, EMEA, and APAC regions. It covers over 18 industries and respondents from distinct roles, including HR, IT, and LOB functions. This survey was designed to understand trends in the usage of automation, AI, and GenAI technologies to enhance workforce productivity and collaboration. In addition, it explores the impact of GenAI solutions on employee experience and frontline workforce enablement.

The research suggests that organizations are investing in GenAI technologies for full-time employees rather than contractors or using automation to replace current job roles at present. IT leaders forecast GenAI investments to grow the most compared with other automation technologies in the next 18 months. Over 69% of companies stated they are investing in GenAI and/or evaluating its impact on the workforce. However, the investment priorities vary by company sizes; while larger enterprises expect GenAI to enhance customer experience, smaller companies aim to use GenAI to improve employee productivity.

"GenAI continues to show promise as a means to improve employee productivity and evolve traditional work models in conjunction with other AI and automation technologies, "said Amy Loomis, research vice president, IDC's Future of Work. "Organizations are learning to implement and embed technologies that assist, advice, and offer to act on behalf of employees as they come to redefine standard work practices for desk-based and frontline workers."
