Abstract
This IDC Survey Spotlight highlights the results of IDC's February 2024 Worldwide CEO Survey. Although IDC typically references a company's CISO in research, the reality is that smaller organizations just do not have a CISO. To answer the question of the prevalence of CISOs by size of business, IDC leveraged its February 2024 Worldwide CEO Survey of over 350 CEOs. Spoiler alert: other C-level positions are taking precedence. Not only are chief data officer (CDO) and chief digital officer (CDO) more common, but the positions are also being added at a greater rate.
Although there is a significant difference among organizations of various sizes of whether they have a CISO, there is very little difference in the organization's need to report cybersecurity posture to the board. Clearly, the need for cybersecurity is not lower in smaller sizes of businesses; the ability to afford a dedicated CISO appears to be less.
