Abstract

This IDC Survey Spotlight answers the following question: What are the top issues that impact WAN and datacenter operations and strategy? In detail:

  • Approximately 44% of respondents to a recent IDC survey indicated that cloud computing including SaaS and IaaS is the topmost issue impacting WAN and datacenter operations and strategy, followed by connectivity and energy efficiency–related issues.
  • While most companies have migrated their IT infrastructure to cloud infrastructure, expense and complexity are major issues impacting the post-migration cloud dynamic. One of the issues impacting the migration to cloud is repatriation to private cloud. According to IDC research, more than 80% of companies are expecting to undergo some repatriation of compute and storage resources to private cloud or noncloud environments after one year of public cloud migrations.
  • The cost and complexity of managing internal datacenters are key drivers for adopting private cloud platforms and migrating some applications to colocation facilities. This is a trend that IDC is projecting will continue as high-intensity AI computing grows over the next few years. Internal corporate datacenters will most likely require the energy efficiency of colocation facilities as well as the IT partners that are colocated in those datacenters.
  • AI-driven workloads will also drive up the demand for high-capacity and redundant networking circuits for access to hyperscalers and between datacenters.
