Abstract

This IDC Survey is IDC's fifth deep dive into the topic of ransomware and provides a perspective of how ransomware evolves over time, leveraging IDC's Future Enterprise Resiliency and Spending Survey. IT leaders face an array of conflicting challenges in 2024 as they develop IT budgeting plans that anticipate potential economic disruptions while still maintaining the shift to digital business models.

Key findings include:

  • Finance and healthcare have the larger mean ransoms. Healthcare is most likely to pay the ransom.
  • Getting the decryptor to work is problematic, especially in finance.
  • All verticals have an issue with the successful attacking of backups. The problem is most pronounced in healthcare and retail.
  • Government is the least likely to have data exfiltrated. Transportation/media/utilities has the highest accuracy rate at exfiltrating data of value.
