Abstract

This IDC Perspective looks at the "digital business" chief information security officer (CISO) as the CISO skills evolve to embrace a new reality. The CISO is thought of as a cybersecurity expert. While that is most certainly a requirement of the role, it is simply not enough anymore. As IT has changed, so have the requirements of the CISO. The decision-making implications of the "digital business" era on the role of the CISO are significant. CISOs will need to embrace the change and allow themselves to adapt and evolve to embrace new expectations.

"Given the changing nature of business, the skills of the 'digital business' CISO need to evolve beyond just being a cybersecurity expert. People skills need to be honed for success. Strategy and architecture become increasingly important as the CISO moves from a practitioner's approach and more to that of a consultant. Finally, leadership and collaboration are now critical as the CISO will not always have the ability to mandate security measures but will need to work through others." — Frank Dickson, group vice president, Security and Trust at IDC
