Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses the guidelines to master technology modernization. In a time of artificial intelligence (AI) disruption, legacy modernization is no longer work that can be done opportunistically or in an ad hoc way. Rather, every organization should approach modernization as a strategic and tactical imperative that is as important as any other aspect of the organization's technology road map. By making conscious decisions using a logical approach, organizations can pragmatically achieve their modernization goals.

"To successfully leverage generative AI (GenAI) and the other forms of AI, modernization of legacy systems and technologies is not optional. Many legacy environments are not capable of supporting the new technologies and needs and will not keep up with the accelerating pace of change," says Niel Nickolaisen, adjunct research advisor, IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP).
