Abstract

This IDC Perspective looks at the future of collaboration and the cultural accelerators that power artificial intelligence (AI)–assisted collaboration. Collaboration is the interpersonal actions that create value from interacting around shared goals with an assumption that everyone can add value. This is not only about assigning work to be done or adding visibility to activities but also about working together and creating a culture that supports the "flow of work." AI simultaneously enhances and complicates collaboration. While collaboration is very much something people do, collaboration technologies enable the creation of greater value. Now it uses the help of artificial intelligence or machine learning for delivering new efficiencies and metrics as well as evolving how we work. Yet collaboration informs the AI models delivering these new efficiencies.

"Collaboration is not just technical," says Wayne Kurtzman, research director, Social, Communities, and Collaboration at IDC. "It's the cultural willingness to share content and win as a team using the right technologies with an assumption that everyone can add value."
