Abstract
This IDC Market Perspective examines the growing importance of complex 5G policy support and enforcement and its crucial role in providing a bridge between network resources and monetization. As telcos embrace 5G core network elements, they will need to rely on PCF to establish and monitor network policies pertaining to network quality of service (QoS), user profile and access, and application performance, all of which must perform in concert for telcos to deliver 5G services.
"If the 5G core is the 'brain' within 5G networks, PCF is the frontal lobe that governs planning, organizing, and decision-making," says John Byrne, research VP, Communications SP Operations and Monetization at IDC. "To monetize 5G deployments more effectively, telcos must harness the PCF's crucial role in integrating device, connection, session management, and subscriber and application-related network resources that are all crucial to deliver differentiated, personalized, and monetizable 5G use cases."
