Abstract

This IDC Survey details results from IDC's 2023 U.S. Smart Home Survey, which was fielded in August. The survey asked respondents questions regarding consumer adoption of and attitudes toward a variety of smart home devices and services, security and privacy concerns, and smart assistants. This IDC Survey focuses on aspects of the survey related to satisfaction scores for leading smart home device brands.

"Consumers generally report moderate to high satisfaction with their smart home, although this varies by device type and the length of time that a household has been using smart home devices," said Adam Wright, research manager for IDC's Smart Home and Office Devices program. "Satisfaction with the smart home increases in the early years of adoption, but then plateaus around three to four years, and actually declines for those that have used smart home devices for five years or more. Vendors are challenged to deliver on the initial value propositions that these devices have promised and need to sincerely address long-term problems like issues of reliability and complexity of use, or otherwise the smart home risks becoming stale and underutilized."
