Abstract

This IDC Survey looks at the rising interest in smart sets among consumers. Smart sets refer to ownership of a smartphone, smartwatch, and smart earwear that can be used in tandem with each other. In spring 2023, IDC surveyed 2,000 wearables owners, asking if they owned a smart set, their interest in case they did not own a smart set, what experiences they would like to have, and what price points they would consider when buying each device separately or together.

"As multiple device ownership rises, so does the opportunity to have these devices run together," says Ramon T. Llamas, research director with IDC's Wearables team. "So far this has happened organically to extend a use case from one device (like music on a smartphone) to another (like listening to music with smart earwear). But as applications rely on different devices to run properly — think of watching a workout coach on your smartphone, listening to the workout on your earwear, and tracking your performance on a smartwatch — the experience is becoming more sophisticated and more immersive."

"Smart sets and experiences that run across them are still in their initial stages," reminds Llamas. "But already consumers are starting to see the value in using them together and are open to other experiences that also connect to other devices. Vendors should consider this when planning their device and application ecosystems not only to sell more devices but also to design applications to incorporate in these devices."
