Abstract

This IDC Innovators document profiles three emerging vendors in the nascent market for enterprise-grade decentralized storage. Providers are positioning decentralized storage as a lower-cost, highly scalable, and sustainable alternative to the services of major public clouds. Although the nascent technology holds promise, providers face challenges in trying to gain recognition and convince enterprises they can trust storing their business data in a decentralized network of independent storage operators.

"Decentralized storage is an emerging technology that enterprise storage buyers should keep on their radar screens for its potential to store data securely at a lower cost than conventional cloud and on-premises storage," said Carol Sliwa, research director, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies, IDC. "Enterprise-grade options remain a work in progress and may not be a suitable choice for every use case or data type, but organizations may want to consider testing one of the more established offerings with non-mission-critical data to gauge its potential benefits."
