Abstract

This IDC study provides historical data (2018–2022) and forecast data (2023–2027) for the worldwide and U.S. external enterprise storage systems (ESSs) market. This forecast represents an annual view of the quarterly forecast released in December 2023 in IDC's 3Q23 Worldwide Quarterly Enterprise Storage Systems Tracker. The forecast and historical data focuses on end-user consumption in three categories of enterprise storage systems — external OEM, internal OEM, and "other," which covers cumulative shipments of systems that ODMs sell directly to customers. For each of these categories, IDC has estimated value (end-user spending), terabytes, and price per gigabyte.

"Following strong performance in 2022, the worldwide external ESS market is going through a period of weakness in 2023. However, the factors influencing this weakness aren't fundamental to storage demand, and the market is expected to rebound in 2024 after some softness in the first half of the year," says Natalya Yezhkova, research VP, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies at IDC. "Long term, investments in storage infrastructure will continue to be driven by the overall growing demand for storage capacity, but emerging workloads such as generative AI and edge will be additional drivers for market growth."
