Abstract
This IDC study presents our U.S. 5G smartphone shipments forecast by operating system and air interface. The U.S. 5G smartphone market will reach 112.6 million units shipped in 2023, up 4.0% from the 108.2 million units shipped in 2022. From there, shipments will hit 152.6 million units in 2027, the final year of our forecast period, resulting in a CAGR of 7.1%.
"Despite the overall market decline in 2023, 5G volumes continue to grow in popularity as most U.S. carriers continue to transition exclusively to 5G handsets," said Anthony Scarsella, research manager with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "Growth at the premium tier of the market ultimately assisted with the growth of 5G whether consumers asked for it or not. Although we still see some prepaid and low-end models featuring 4G, by 2027, 99% of the market will be 5G, even at the low tier."
