Abstract

This IDC study discusses the forecast for the worldwide supply chain planning applications market. Off good growth 2022, this market is expected to see a continuation of that growth through 2027 as organizations look to both better optimize their supply chain operations in the short term and ensure they are resilient to market disruptions in the longer term. Although the specter of recession continues to linger, it is viewed as much less likely at this point in 2023 than it was at this same time last year. IDC continues to see no reason to temper the forecast, although of course there is always that possibility as we move materially into 2024. Indeed, IDC surveys suggest that, while supply chain executives are mindful of operational efficiency in the short term, they recognize the importance of the supply chain as an enabler of new business models. Growth in the supply chain planning applications market will be driven by both this short-term and long-term focus.

"Supply chains have responded to disruption with capabilities and physical networks to increase agility which, in turn, have increased complexity. Without the use of modern planning tools, supply chains simply cannot handle the level of complexity needed to survive and thrive and can't compete at the levels necessary for competitive differentiation. Supply chain planning investments are both a competitive necessity and key to driving a differentiating edge over peers," says Eric Thompson, director, Worldwide Supply Chain Planning and Multi-Enterprise Networks, IDC.
