Abstract

This IDC Tech Buyer Presentation examines how generative AI promises to transform the developer experience as well as software development practices and methodologies more generally. The document elaborates eight key trends that ensue from the maturation of generative AI technologies such as the increased importance of GPUs to contemporary development, the ascendancy of development that focuses on foundation models, the transformation of the development stack, and the increased adoption of computationally intensive use cases. In addition, this document examines development workstreams specific to the intersection of generative AI and application development as well as development that operates on foundation models and large language models.

"The maturation of generative AI technologies has a slew of repercussions that go above and beyond the amplification of developer productivity," notes Arnal Dayaratna, research VP of Software Development, IDC. "Notably, generative AI will change the development stack and require developers to become increasingly familiar with a new ecosystem of tools that include foundation models, model hubs and gardens, and open source frameworks that streamline development on large language models such as LangChain and Semantic Kernel. This disruption will require technology buyers to exercise care and discretion with respect to the integration of generative AI into development-related workstreams."
