Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses the role of generative AI (GenAI) in data management systems, both now and in the future. It considers the present and future direction of this technology, and how it is most likely to be used. It also reviews the limitations, perils, and promise of GenAI in data management systems.

"With the sudden attention given to ChatGPT and similar technologies, we see great interest in the ability to leverage large amounts of existing text to produce useful content, discover patterns, and produce insights from a huge base of written material that far exceeds what humans could do on their own," says Carl Olofson, research vice president, Data Management Software at IDC. "Generative AI has produced great curiosity and more than a little anxiety in the general public regarding what it does, can do, and will do. There is considerable confusion over just what it is and is not capable of, and this confusion can get in the way of understanding the true promise and peril in this technology."
