Abstract

This IDC Perspective discusses how network observability solutions represent the next generation of network management and serve as the right match at the right time for the hyper-connected digital business model. Continual and comprehensive measurement and monitoring of digital infrastructure conditions and components enables consistent service delivery, rapid problem resolution and threat mitigation, and ready acceptance of new workflows and workloads. By providing detailed intelligence, in-depth insights, and precise directed actions, network observability solutions — whether delivered via on-premises systems or cloud-based services — have a positive impact not only for many IT operational tasks (e.g., service validation, problem resolution, threat mitigation) but also more broadly across strategic IT and business management efforts (e.g., network optimization, application delivery, cyber-resilience, and digital innovation).

"IDC research indicates that only about one-third of IT organizations make use of network observability solutions. This means that most organizations are not able to leverage the vast array of intelligence and insights offered by and through the underlying network infrastructure," says Mark Leary, director, Network Observability and Automation at IDC. "Without knowing the operating conditions of the network and operational status of network components, the IT organization is in the dark when resolving problems, mitigating threats, managing connected resources, and adapting to new digital business connections, exchanges, and workloads. This threatens IT service levels, staff productivity, security postures, and the speed and precision of digital business execution."
