Abstract

This IDC Perspective explores platform business models and how they differ from sophisticated technology platforms such as AWS and other cloud service providers' platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offerings. This document's example is VIIZR, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) tool built on the Salesforce platform that helps trade businesses apply digital and mobile technologies to transform customer experiences, operations, scheduling, and service delivery.

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are challenged with leveraging digital technologies for business transformation. Most SMBs lack the resources to attract already scarce talent or hire a consultancy to help guide the transformation process. Purpose-built platforms can help streamline and simplify the transition to digital by providing a fully integrated, end-to-end, business-ready foundation to transform how work is done. This includes centralizing business functions, standardizing workflows and processes; capturing, securing, and analyzing data for better decision-making; and using insights to create deeper customer relationships that improve customer experiences and increase customer lifetime value. Using a platform such as VIIZR, small and medium-sized trade businesses — including HVAC, landscaping contractors, electricians, moving companies, and construction firms — can tap into the many benefits of enterprise-grade digital technology without the high cost, complexity, and disruption.

"VIIZR is a perfect example of how a purpose-built platform can level the playing field for SMBs. VIIZR functions as a strategic partner, enabling companies to leverage digital technologies to navigate change and disruption more effectively, respond to new opportunities rapidly, and ensure that the business is well positioned for the next generation of owners and operators," according to Frank Della Rosa, vice president, SaaS, Business Platforms, and Ecosystems for IDC.
