Abstract

This IDC Perspective examines the growing range of cost-optimized public cloud object storage offerings available to enterprises today. The term "cost optimized" expands on the concept of "cold" storage, which focuses on archiving infrequently used data, adding in services that are aimed at active data sets and made available at the lowest possible cost, but which may lack a broader ecosystem of adjacent, native cloud services.

"The lines between hot, warm, and cold public cloud object storage have blurred as vendors launch new capabilities for intelligent data tiering and automatic data movement, " said Chris Kanaracus, research director, Cloud Infrastructure Services at IDC. "Customers also have more options for low-cost, general-purpose object cloud storage that emphasizes maximum cost value over other attributes. This growing level of choice reflects real-life customer needs and provides the level of choice more enterprises want in their cloud service provider partners in an era where data growth, data retention, and data residency requirements are more acute than ever."
