Abstract
This IDC Survey primarily summarizes findings from IDC's 3Q23 survey of U.S. gamers as it relates to PC/Mac and home console gamer accessory and peripheral purchases. Demographics of PC and console accessory/peripheral buyers are examined through 3Q23.
Buyer demand is assessed in eight input product categories among combined PC/Mac/Linux gamers: gaming mice, standard mice, gaming keyboards, standard keyboards, gamepad controllers, joysticks/flight sticks, webcams, and racing wheels. Demand is also assessed in eight audio product categories: headphones, wired stereo/surround headsets, wireless stereo/surround headsets, wired mono chat headsets, mono or stereo speakers, surround sound speakers, standalone microphones, and True Wireless earbuds or headsets. The survey further examines annualized PC/Mac monitor, GPU, CPU, and memory upgrade buying rates, as well as additional storage and gaming chair purchasing rates. Data from IDC's North American Distribution Tracker (NADT) is also included to provide some year-over-year color on brand-specific dynamics.
From a home console vantage point, the eight input categories assessed are first-party (console OEM) gamepad controllers, third-party gamepad controllers, mice, keyboards, webcams, music game controllers, racing wheels, and PS VR/VR2 headsets. On the audio side of the market, annual buying rates of the following eight product types are assessed: headphones, stereo/surround speakers, sound bars, wired mono chat headsets, first-party (console OEM) wired stereo/surround headsets, third-party wired stereo/surround headsets, third-party wireless stereo/surround headsets, and first-party (console OEM) wireless stereo/surround headsets. In addition, the survey compares the top 6 most purchased accessories in the preceding year among Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 gamers.
This survey sizes worldwide retail spending in six PC gaming/gaming-related accessory categories, including gaming monitors, and in two home console accessory product categories from 2019 to 2025.
"Broadly speaking, the PC and console accessory and peripheral market had a good 2023. Growth rebounded from 2022's significant downturn, and we currently expect global and U.S. growth rates will be positive in most product categories this year." — Lewis Ward, IDC's research director of Gaming, Esports, and VR/AR
