Abstract

This IDC study offers an overview of the competitive dynamics in the home video game console market through 2023 from a hardware bundle, packaged game, and digital game and subscription service spending standpoint. It offers insights and advice to technology suppliers so that they can stay ahead of related trends, threats, and opportunities. This study traces global market share changes for the following home console families: Nintendo's Switch and Wii U, Sony's PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, and Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. In addition, the study touches on the impact of digital-only microconsoles, gaming-capable streaming media players, and smart TV gaming services.

"Sony's PlayStation 5 led the home video game console market in 2023 in terms of total revenue and market share, and it outperformed Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X/S in several important respects. Microsoft's blockbuster acquisition of Activision Blizzard, though, sent shockwaves through the console ecosystem late last year and has reshuffled 2024's competitive deck." — Lewis Ward, research director, IDC's Gaming, eSports, and VR/AR services
