Abstract

This IDC Survey looks at global data flow efficiency. Data flow within enterprises transitions from disorganized to organized as data progresses from external raw inputs, through internal business processes, to outputs. We argue that, in this way, an enterprise's core function can be understood as converting disorganized (data) inputs into smooth and continuous outputs. We find two common states for enterprises to be in: an efficient state, where around half the data is disorganized and half organized, and an inefficient state, where around two-thirds of data is disorganized. Enterprises must deal with complexity stemming from disorganized inputs, but their focus should always be on removing volatility as initial inputs transition to outputs. Enterprises can trace the paths that data takes through various internal processes to identify gaps or interruptions to flow, diagnosing whether these can be reduced by addressing business process inefficiencies or improving integration of processes or reallocation of resources.
