Abstract

This IDC Survey looks at the perceived value from changing data flows. Organizations should embrace change, whether that involves managing increasing or decreasing data flows. Increasing data flow is a source of greatest economic value for enterprises; however, decreasing data flow also provides benefit above those of static data flows. Increasing data flow can lead to "data overflow," where data velocity is too high for the enterprise to handle effectively and data analysis is needlessly complicated. Enterprises can benefit from efforts to reorganize their data and minimize the potential complexity of data processing. "Data flows through organizations are dynamic. Increasing data flow brings value, but equally important is periodic reorganization of data flows to increase efficiency, which may shrink data flow in the short term," said Thomas Jackson, research director of IDC's Data Valuation market research and advisory service.
