Abstract

This IDC Perspective details how supply chain constraints, labor shortages, shifts in consumer demand, increasingly high costs of fulfillment, and rising macroeconomic concerns (around inflation, geopolitics, energy consumption, and environmental changes) all pose significant challenges to retailers. The combination of challenges and pressure for many quarters to be green is driving focus on operationalizing sustainability by reducing waste and driving cost efficiencies in the extended retail supply chain.

"Today's end-to-end retail supply chains are beset by many challenges driven by the increased levels of complexity imposed by omni-channel journeys," says Jordan K. Speer, research director, IDC Retail Insights. "Among the many challenges are a need for increased resources and labor to fulfill orders, which is eating into the profitability of organizations and also adding to their impact on the environment. Operationalizing sustainability, which is essentially shorthand for operating more optimally and efficiently, is the key to improving both profitability and sustainability metrics."
